Big Hair and Plastic Grass

Ah Baseball in the 70s. Was there ever a better time for the American Pastime? Bill Veeck was back in Chicago, the Cubs still weren't contenders, but had Ferguson Jenkins, Bill Madlock, Don Kessinger, and Bruce Sutter, and the Big Red Machine, Oakland A's, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers ruled the post season. Let's not forget Willie Stargell and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

This was the era that I grew up with - Reggie Jackson, Wilbur Wood, Bucky Dent, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Oscar Gamble, Harmon Killebrew, Dave Kingman, the list could go on and on. I remember seeing the White Sox in their red pinstripes. I remember Disco Demolition Night, I remember losing bets to my Grandma on a Twins-Yankees series, I remember my Grandpa complaining about whichever Cub wasn't playing up to his expectations that day.

This book was like reliving my childhood all over again. It isn't a perfect book. There is some repetition that a good editor could have pulled together and as a survey, it doesn't get all the small details, but I'd recommend this to any baseball fan.
